The oldest and the largest institution of higher education in the Russian Far East, Far Eastern National University was established in 1899 by a special order of Emperor Nicholas II as the Institute of Oriental Studies.
Far Eastern National University is one of the top five Russian Universities according to ratings of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. It is the only university of Eastern Russia accredited by the Russian Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology as a scientific university. By the level of developing the educational, scientific, international programs and informational technologies FENU ranks among the best Universities of Russian Federation and has very high authority in the educational Space of Asia-Pacific Region.
Nowadays FENU comprises 25 institutes, 47 schools and 156 academic departments. There are about 4,000 faculty members and staff, including 970 Doctors of Science and Professors and Candidates of Science. At present, about 40,000 students are enrolled in 585 educational programs, 108 specialties and 160 specializations. More than 550 postgraduate students study in FENU in 62 specialties (Ph.D. & upper Ph.D.) Besides, various models of pre-university training and professional development are offered by FENU, including specialized classes in some Vladivostok secondary schools; FENU Preparatory program; programs of FENU Institute of Pre-University Training and Institute of Professional Development. All the above-mentioned, as well as FENU Primary School, and Kindergarten, demonstrate very successful implementation of the project aimed at developing FENU into a multilevel educational system.
Far Eastern National University focus on internationalization of education, chosen in 1990-s was extremely topical. Dynamically developing international programs, FENU managed to take the leading place in international educational space. Far Eastern National University is being actively integrated into the global university and information environment.
FENU is a member of five international associations: Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), the Asian and Pacific University Presidents’ Conference (APUPC), Northeast Asian Forum of University Presidents (NAFUP). Vladimir I. Kurilov, FENU President, is a member of Executive Committees of all the above-mentioned associations. The Far Eastern Branch of Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO exists on the basis of Far Eastern National University.
Annually over 1,000 foreign citizens and over 100 foreign delegations visit FENU. The University has about 100 agreements on academic cooperation and ranks first in the Russian Far East due to its academic mobility. More than 200 foreign students study at FENU programs toward their Bachelor degree, Master degree or Diploma of Specialist. Nearly 30 foreign specialists work at FENU institutes and schools. The University includes the Russian School for Foreign Students, a unique educational division where over 300 students from the USA, England, Japan, Republic of Korea and People’s Republic of China and many other countries learn Russian annually.
The University has close relationships with decades of higher educational institutions in numerous countries: Japan, the USA, Republic of Korea, People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Australia, Vietnam, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
